SSF2024: Main Concert

Scandinavia’s foremost festival for South Asian classical music and dance is back for its 18th edition with this year’s main concert at Musikaliska Kvarteret! Every year the festival presents a program carefully curated to bring our dear audience the best artists from near and far.

This year, we get to experience breathtaking vocal art in a duet by the young shooting stars from Calcutta, brothers Anirban Das and Diptam Sinha Biswas, accompanied by Debasish Bhattacharjee on tabla. In addition, the festival will also offer a meeting between three virtuosos who meet for the first time ever on stage, the startup of Nordic Sangeet, a project to bring artists of the Nordic countries together: Wali Heidar on Afghan rabab and Norway’s sitar queen Rohini Sahajpal plays raga together with Sweden’s own tabla master Suranjana Ghosh. The whole event will start with mesmerizing bharatnatyam by Radhini Rao.

Stockholm Sangeet Festival 2024 is organized by Stockholm Sangeet Förening in collaboration with Musikaliska Kvarteret, Farhang Förening, Kulturföreningen Källaren, Kulturskolan Stockholm, Stallet Världens Musik, Studieförbundet Bilda, Saraswathy Kalakendra Institution of Fine Arts, SearchIndie, Sharda Music Sweden, Best Western Plus Time Hotel, Sydasien and Dhaibat with support from Swedish Arts Council, Stockholms Stad, Region Stockholm, Nordic Culture Fund and Indian Embassy

Anirban Das is initiated into North Indian Classical Music at an early age of five. His initial training started with his parents Shri Kanai Das and Smt.Chandrima Banerjee (Das). Being from a musical family Anirban was very serious about his music along with his studies. Later he took extensive taalim or training from Shri Subhomoy Bhattacharya for several years. During the period he came in touch with the renowned musician and composer Shri Uday Bandopadhyay for a training of Light Classical Music too. Later in the year 2013 Anirban became a Music Scholar of West Bengal Govt State Music Academy under guidance of Vidushi Mandira Lahiri (Disciple and daughter-in-law of Sangeet Acharya Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri). Since then Anirban is continuing his taalim with Guru Vidushi Mandira Lahiri and also learning with Prof. Dr. Chaitanya Kunte (Pune) As a music scholar Anirban and Diptam started their duet musical journey from West Bengal Govt State Music Academy. They have already given hundreds of performances in last 10 years. Presently their duet musical journey has earned a fame in the world of Indian Classical Music and have been highly appreciated by the musicians too.

Diptam Sinha Biswas

Diptam was initiated in vocal classical music at an early age and his traning began in his hometown Murshidabad (kandi) under guidance of Sri Ashoke Acharya. Later in the year 2002 he came to Kolkata for his higher studies and started the tradition of Guru Shishya Parampara under guidance of lengendary vocalist Pandit Dinanath Mishra. Diptam continued his taalim with pandit ji for long 14 years. Diptam is also trained in Nazrulgeeti from Smt. Chandrima Bandopadhyay. In the year 2013 Diptam joined West Bengal Govt. State Music Academy as a Music Scholar under guidance of Guru Vidushi Mandira Lahiri (Disciple & Daughter-in-law of Sangeet Acharya Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri) to learn the different forms of Semi Classical & Light Classical Music. Presently Diptam is also under guidance of Pt. Omkar Dadarkar from the year 2015. He is also learning from Prof. Dr. Chaitanya Kunto (Pune). Diptam and Anirban is a well known duet vocalist from Kolkata. They have been performing as a duet vocalist for last 10 years. They have given hundreds of duet performances. Diptam and Anirban founded their own organisation named as “Sampuran an initiative by Anirban and Diptam” A representator of Sangeet Acharya Pandit Chinmay Lahiri’s Charana and working as a researcher with his rare compositions. Diptam proved himself as a able scholar of music while he was a scholar at West Bengal Govt.State Music Academy. Diptam & Anirban started their duct vocal performances under the guidance of West Bengal Govt. State Music Academy. Later on their duet performance are highly accepted and appreciated by the music lovers.

Debasish Bhattacharjee began taking tabla lessons with his father at the age of seven. Born and raised in Serampore near Kolkatta in the Indian state of West Bengal, he eventually switched to the professional music teacher Pandit Swapan Chowdhury at the age of 12 and learned the tabla style of the Lucknow gharana. From 1987 he received lessons from Professor Bablu Biswas. To date, Debasish Bhattarcharjee has performed in almost all states of India, as well as in the USA, Dubai, Russia and various European countries such as France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Malta and Switzerland. Debasish Bhattacharjee has lived in Cologne since 2008 and is the managing director and tabla teacher of the Anubhab Academy. He currently plays regular concerts all over Germany and works on various musical projects at the border between Indian and Western music.

Debasish Bhattacharjee

Medical doctor by profession, she was born and raised in an Indian classical musical familiy in Norway. The instrument she plays is called sitar (indian string instrument). She started playing sitar at the age of 5 under the guidance of her father, Shri Lal Sahajpal. At the age of 7, she was selected to perform in different schools by the Rikskonsertene (Norwegian National Art for young audience ). After that she started frequently playing concerts. Apart from playing Indian classical music she has also performed with symphony orchestra, with western classical musicians, fusion with Norwegian folk, jazz, pop, rock, and other types of world music at different national and international festivals. She has participated in National level Theatres i Norway as well. In 2008, she received a World music and Dance centre (WMDC), CODARTS scholarship for extraordinary young talented musicians from ‘Her Highness Queen Beatrix’ of Holland to spend 3 months in Rotterdam. Getting a taste of the education, music and atmosphere that the city has to offer. Here she was introduced to Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. She started learning from Pandit ji to understand and develop the depth of Indian Classical music. Since then she is learning from him. In june 2017 she was awarded a ‘Certificate of Recognition’ for her remarkable talent and an outstanding capacity to absorb the spirit of Indian classical music on Sitar from the CODARTS- University of Arts, Rotterdam, Holland. Since then she has been collabrating with excellent Norwegian musicians and aswell as international musicians.

Wali Heidar, was born into a family of musicians in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, where the Rubab was the most important instrument. From the day Wali received a Rubab, he has wanted to spread the music in his country and around the world. The conditions for practicing music are both difficult and dangerous in Afghanistan, which has meant that Wali has had to fight hard to be able to live his dream. With persistence and passion, he has made his way from country to country and managed to spread his music and culture in many countries and to many people, from the King of Norway to young people with musical dreams of their own, whom he has been able to teach music to and inspire. Wali’s journey through the world’s many countries has resulted in his own fusion of both East and West, which is noticeable in his music.

Suranjana Ghosh

Suranjana Ghosh was born in Siliguri in the Indian state of West Bengal. She was taught by her father Late Sunil Kumar Das for more than 18 years. Later till date, she has been taught by Padmashree Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. She has a Bachelor of Arts, (Hons in Percussion) and Master of Arts. (Percussion, Tabla), also Bachelor of Education from Rabindra Bharati University of Calcutta with the highest marks. The studies also resulted in two gold medals as well as a regional (West Bengal) and a national award. Suranjana has been documented for her life and music by National Swedish television(SVT2) ” Lat tablan tala” Suranjana is trained in Classical North Indian music and that was exclusively what she practiced and performed until the early 2000s. It is in this tradition her music is founded and still her main musical genre. In 2002, she visited Sweden for the first time and has since then encountered various genres such as jazz, Swedish folk music, ethno, flamenco and western classical music, adding Indian influences and tabla sounds.

Vidushi Radhini Rao is an accomplished artist of classism, a versatile choreographer of aesthetics, and an epitome of creativity. Dance has been life itself to her rather than just passion. With an engineering degree in her academics, she chose to be a dancer for her life. She also has a master’s degree in Carnatic vocal music from music university, Mysore, and currently working as a global process engineer at Scania AB. She is an exponent of pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam trained for 20 plus years under the guidance of guru Dr Kripa Padke and has made her first debut show ragapravesham in 2011. Also, she is now training under Sri Vidwan Vijay Kumar from Chennai. She has participated in several cultural competitions conducted by prestigious institutions and has won many prizes and laurels. She has been performing in many stages like IITs, Dubai international conference, Nada laya Vinyasa Göteborg, Huddinge festival, Namaste Stockholm etc. She has also been featured in a film called The dance battle curated by the Dance museum, Stockholm.  She is also trained in folk dances like dollu kunita, kamsale etc along with kathak for a few years. Living in Sweden for 7 years she has started her own school named “Kalaashaala” to develop the Indian culture through music and dance.
